May Mix Tape : the '00s : Side B (part one)
May 16, 2013 07:15 AM PDT

Ska in the '00s soldiered on as more and more fans left the sound for something new. Why is this? My best guess is that the pre-mid '90s folks getting into ska were the kind of people seeking out new sounds in the underground. By 2002 most of those folks had moved on to find other new stuff to listen to as they were always just music seekers. What's to bad is that many parts of the US didn't have an established ska scene that dated back further than 1996, so there wasn't much of a scene to stick with it after the local ska band broke up or moved to a bigger city. It was also around this time when the usual discussion about ska went from "Ska? What's that?" to "Oh, ska? You still listen to that junk?" That last phrase is forever burnt in my mind after it was uttered to me by a girl in a comic shop in the Winter of 2003 as she was picking out a classic rock record to buy while wearing a Jethro Tull t-shirt, I knew this girl from punk, ska & power pop shows. So, here's to the bands that keep the fire going through the dark times! Here's to the fans that found ska, liked and continued to support it!

Skapone – Men’s Club (the Black & White Album ’08)
the Malcontents – the Greatest Contradiction (Never Enough ’03)
Pressure Cooker – Refugee (I Want to Tell You ‘ 01)

May Mix Tape : the '00s : Side A (part two)
May 09, 2013 02:00 AM PDT

And here we are again, still stuck in '00s, hearing the bright sparks of ska bands that refused to throw in the towel, just because mainstream taste-makers did. I won't lie to you, during much of the early '00s, I didn't abandon ska music, but I got much more insular and into the bands in the Midwest at the time before moving out to LA half way through that decade and trying to catch up w/ the ska that was going on in the world at the time. I feel as if I am still playing catch up, but I loved my local ska bands so much I wanted to give them all the support I could, sorry world ska scene, I'm learning and making up for it now! And this concludes side A of the 90min '00s mix tape.

Infamous Jake & the Pinstripe Mafia - Standing Proud (This is the Beginning of the End '03)

May Mix Tape : the '00s : Side A (part one)
May 02, 2013 12:02 AM PDT

It's May and that means another mix tape! Hurrah! Now, the '00s were getting to be a dark time for ska music. Bands were breaking up, switching over to emo and rock and/or dropping their horn sections all together. It was sad. Luckily, two things were going on, some bands were sticking it out and other bands were forming to fill that void. Getting booked wasn't easy, ska was on its way back underground, but you'd have to be really out of touch to miss these acts. This whole month is dedicated to those bands in the form of a 90min mix tape broken up over a month. Enjoy it, let it take you back, it did for me!

Big D & the Kids Table - Evil Girl / Angry Girl (the Gipsy Hill EP '02)
Cornerstone 96-98 - Eggshells (Cornerstone 96-98 '04)
Johnny Nine & the Racers - My Beat (Chin Up '09)

Long Live the Spring
April 25, 2013 02:00 AM PDT

Aw yeah, Spring time is fast approaching, and Spring time is the perfect time for some ska music! At least I always thought so. This if for you, you who enjoy Spring, drive w/ the windows open, take a hike, or lounge in your backyard to crank up some ska!

Additional note: Since the new year each band has only had one play on 23min of Ska. It was both harder and easier than I thought it would be. I really wanted to bring more variety to the show this year and I think I may be pulling that off! I think this little experiment was a success w/ exposing myself and all you listeners to a lot more great ska!

Less Than Jake - History of a Boring Town (Hello Rockview '98)
the Vengers - Hard Man Fe' Dead (Push This? '95)
Save the Swim Team - Song on a Shitty Guitar (the Big Compromise '13)
Skalie - Sexy Molly (For Sale '07)
After Hours - Mad Hearted Woman (the Trouble with Those Guys is... '00)

End of the Evening

It is the end of another night out on the town, what kind of craziness did you get into? Me, not too much, beers drank w/ old friends from back home, catching up w/ some family and friends, so you know, the usual, it is what late nights were meant for. I know it is so cold in the rest of the country, but Los Angeles is so warm that it is already getting me in that Springtime mood. It is pretty crazy! Raise your glasses if you've had a great night out lately, and tip them (and a few more) back if you need one.

Wobbly Bob - That's What She Said (Life Lessons for Losers '11)

Night on the Town

Woo! Look at that! Another new episode! As I was putting this together, wanting to go a little old school, I found the new albums from Son of Dad and Smerin's Anti-Social Club and just had to include some songs from them and it just changed the whole direction of the podcast. There's a lot of instrumentals on this episode, which also wasn't intended when building it! I hope that you all enjoy this episode as much as I enjoyed finding some of these bands and songs and putting them together!

Day in the Park

I want to go to the park. Go to the park and put on some good music and dance. Dance my ass off. It would be great. Ska music, sunshine and nature. Happiness would abound. But for many it is too cold for all that, so put on this episode and think of those times, let it be a reminder of what is in the coming months. The sun and warmth is coming, but the ska beat will ever be at your side to guide you towards it.

It Could be Great
February 28, 2013 02:00 AM PST

Since I last left you I spent a week on vacation. Not just on vacation, but sick. Yes, I was sick on vacation. It sucked. I'm supposed to be relaxing, getting some sun and hanging out on the beaches or something. Instead I'm stuck inside. Boo! On the upside I got a bit more time to jam out to a bunch of forgotten and new songs on my ipod, which resulted in this exact episode. Good stuff that all should've been used in a episode before now. So enjoy this, I know that I did while I was coughing up a lung in a darkened hotel room.

the Valuables - Habits (the Valuables '10)
the Skints - Rat-at-at (Part & Parcel '12)
Pressure Cooker - Hold On (What She Wants '08)

To be the King
February 21, 2013 02:00 AM PST

What does it mean to be the King? I've heard that it is good. What it means to be a specific king, in this case King Django, it means that it time to release a brand new album in which he is backed by some amazing bands, so go check it out. For the rest of this episode I stuck with some of great bands that are also at the top of their craft to complement this opening track. I just heard of The scandals while putting this ep together and I have to say, I'm a fan! Demon Waffle mounted a successful Kickstarter last year to get us this album and I'm glad they pulled it off! I've been hearing about Soul Radics and the Heavy Beat for a while and got to check them out, I hope you are as impressed as I am. I stumbled across Class Action last year and was waiting for the perfect time to slip in a song from their most recent EP. Then to top it all off, a track from the Bosstones, I'm sure you can all agree on how great they are too!

King Django - Career Opportunities (Anywhere I Roam '13)
The scandals - Break SKA Situation (Break SKA Situation / Smile '10)
Demon Waffle - Too Fast (Eat Your Breakfast '12)
Soul Radics - the Worst Thing (Down the Hall '12)
Class Action - Simplify (An Extra Bar of the Wrong Song '12)
the Mighty Mighty Bosstones - Everybody's Better (A Jackknifte to a Swan '02)
the Heavy Beat - One Drop (At the Underground Echo Cellar '12)

Here we go! Another week of great ska music! Old & new, from near and far, by friends and strangers, it's all good stuff. Once again I go back into the vault, or rather the internet trying to once again learn more about the origins of the music I love so much and when I come across a particular outstanding gem I save for a podcast like this. Oh yeah, 60s Ska from some the true originators. If you can't get down to some of these songs, well, I don't know what is wrong with your feet, sir or ma'am, because I know that I'm straight up dancing or tappin' my feet with out abandon.
